The Kaua‘i High School Red Raider football team received the No. 1 seed for Division II football yesterday.
With a 5-0 record heading into its final game against Kapa‘a Friday night, the Red Raiders clinched the KIF championship last week with a 35-6 romp over the Waimea Menehune while celebrating homecoming.
The Saint Louis Crusaders were awarded the top seed in Division I of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Football championships.
Earning the top seed gives Kaua‘i a bye in the first round. This was mentioned by Kaua‘i coach Kelii Morgado during casual conversation at last week’s Spooktacular hosted by the county’s Employee Council where Morgado was escorting his son through the festivities.
“Charlene Quinones, the Kaua‘i athletic director, was talking about the possibility of the team drawing an opening round bye,” Morgado said.
At that time, it was only speculation. Wednesday’s announcement by the HHSAA made it official.
Kaua‘i will play the winner of the No. 4 BIIF and the OIA 1 on Nov. 24 at Vidinha Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m.
A win at home will send Kaua‘i to Aloha Stadium for the Division II championship Dec. 1 starting at 5 p.m.
King Kekaulike, the MIL champion, picked up the No. 2 seed. The No. 3 seed will go to the winner of the Damien/Iolani matchup in the ILH; the fourth seed goes to the BIIF champion which is currently locked three ways between Honoka‘a, Kamehameha Schools and Konawaena. The OIA champion and the OIA Runner-up make up the six-team Division II field, the last two positions coming in unseeded.
Following Saint Louis, the ILH champion, the No. 2 seed of Division I will go to the OIA champion that is currently locked up four ways between Kahuku, Leilehua, Mililani and Waianae.
Baldwin or Lahainaluna will emerge as the MIL champion and get the No. 3 seed.
Opening rounds for both divisions start Nov. 17 at various sites around the state.
