Disheartened by anonymous message
Dear “Teacher,” on Oct. 6 you posted an angry message on The Garden Island (www.kauaiworld.com) Web site in response to the article about Dayne Greene’s fight for justice.
You didn’t identify yourself by name, so what you did was the equivalent of leaving anonymous notes in our boxes. A cowardly act. Still, let me respond:
“HSTA is speaking for only a small group of teachers.”
Not true. Teachers overwhelmingly elected union and SCC reps known to be involved in the HLRB complaint. The climate surveys and leadership surveys clearly show that a majority of the teachers prefer kindness, truth and collaboration over meanness, deception and intimidation.
“I am proud to be working under an administrator like Ms. MaryAnn Bode.”
You are free to have your own value system, but I can’t be proud of constant attempts to hurt people emotionally and psychologically, or of purposely ruining careers.
“She continues to … rise above the personal attacks that these teachers have brought against her. These teachers should either retire, or do their job. They have more time on their hands. Get the computers at our school going! Focus on YOUR job!”
“Personal attacks” — the irony seems to escape you. Besides being terribly rude, your request is a bad idea. (Names withheld) are excellent teachers who are still needed here. The others are also excellent teachers who “do their jobs” quite well. Tell them your recommendations face-to-face.
“Mr. Greene … there is another side to your story. Don’t place the blame on administration!”
Reveal yourself and explain this to Dayne. Tell all the other victims of Ms. Bode’s abuse, so they may benefit from your insights.
“Mr. Tom Perry … HSTA is not represented at Kapa‘a Middle. You have a personal vendetta … leave the rest of us out of it!”
You may not fear losing your livelihood or your ability to provide for your family and pay medical bills, but some of us do, knowing we are targets. While Dayne awaits arbitration, he is not getting paychecks. Tom is an excellent and effective guardian of our rights. Without Tom, Dayne’s career here could be permanently ended. Why would you wish such grave harm upon a person as decent and kind as Dayne Greene? (Anonymously, of course!)
“Spend five minutes in my classroom and you’ll see the eyes of the children enjoying what they do!”
Difficult to do when you are hiding your identity.
Dear Anonymous, your “note” was a mean-spirited diatribe against my colleagues, who are undeserving of your venom. They are good-hearted and dedicated educators — and wonderful human beings. They have risked their health and job security by coming forward. They are willing to speak for those who are too afraid to speak for themselves, and stand for those who fear the very real threat of retaliation. Anonymous notes like this are disheartening (and creepy!), but they continue to fight for what’s right.

Too late, they’re already here
“Swifty” Baptiste is at it again! “No more big-box stores on Kaua‘i.”
Bryan, they’re already here!

Mayor HAS helped average Kauaians
This is in regards to the letter about our mayor from Stan Godes. I have to disagree about your statement that the mayor has never helped the average Kauaian. I actually know the mayor quite well and he is an average Kauaian himself.
You say he has done nothing for the average Kauaian, although he has helped us by fighting the drug problem on this island that affects a lot of the average Kauaians’ households.
He has developed affordable housing that the average Kauaian can afford. So let’s think about this before we make a statement.
Will it make a huge impact if the average Kauaian is paying a little more for gas or a little extra for toilet paper? It might, but it sure would have a bigger impact if they had a child who is addicted to crystal meth and is stealing their gas money to get high. I guess what I am trying to say is think out of the BIG BOX!
No one will agree on every issue, but to say that the mayor has not done a thing for the average Kauaian is just not true.

Watch out for the land sharks
We should not be afraid of the sharks in our ocean; it’s the land sharks we should all be terrified of.
These land shark developers that are swallowing up our land to build more and more overpriced condos/timeshares on our beautiful island should be our biggest concern. We are becoming an extension of California … now that’s terrifying!
Let’s put these greedy developers on the unwanted Superferry and send them all out to sea where sharks belong!

Fighting the big box
Hooray for the mayor. We had a similar situation in our town of Turlock, about the same size as the island of Kaua‘i in terms of population. Our mayor, Kurt Andre, and our City Council went toe-to-toe with Wal-Mart and won. It took a lot of money and effort but it was well worth it.
We are very happy with our Costco and a small Wal-Mart, along with all of the smaller stores serving our community.
If Kaua‘i wants to fight the “big box,” it might be a good idea to contact Turlock’s city government and get some ideas.

More on Superferry issue
The issue of allowing the Superferry without an EIS is ludicrous. This current state administration and political leaders have failed Hawai‘i on all fronts. The environment is at risk and the impact far outweighs economic benefits.
Where are the political leaders on this issue?
