HONOLULU — Trisha Lorenzo of Po‘ipu is at least one of the 10 Neighbor Island cowgirls who will be competing at the 14th Annual Teixeira Performance Horses All-Girl Rodeo on Sept. 23.
Hawaii Women’s Rodeo Association treasurer Lu Faborito said more Kaua‘i contestants are expected, and several cowgirls from the Big Island and Moloka‘i also indicated they will compete. The Neighbor Island competitors join the more than 60 O‘ahu cowgirls expected to rope and ride in the annual year-end rodeo.
For the first time in its 14-year history, the all-girls rodeo will feature a special “Mixed Barrel Racing” exhibition featuring men racing against women in a team 3D format.
Contestants will also compete in 3D Barrel Racing, Pole Bending, Steer Undecorating, Team Roping, Breakaway Roping, Goat Tying and Calf Mugging.
John Teixeira of title sponsor Teixeira Performance Horses said the rodeo features some of Hawai‘i’s fastest riders and pays tribute to Hawai‘i’s paniolo.
“Events like this one are not only good fun to watch and ride in,” he said, “they also help preserve our rich paniolo heritage for future generations.”
Last year, more than 60 contestants — a dozen of whom shipped their horses to O‘ahu from the Neighbor Islands — competed for prize money and a trophy saddle. This year’s rodeo promises to be bigger, with $1,000 in added prize money already donated for the Mixed Barrels event alone.
HWRA president Jessica Keawe-Reuter said this year the 2006 rodeo is part of the Aloha Festivals Week and is expected to draw as many as 100 contestants from across the state.
Cowgirls will be competing for the “All-Around Cowgirl” trophy saddle and rodeo officials anticipate more than 5,000 spectators at the New Town & Country Stables in Waimanalo, O‘ahu.
