Three close friends from Kekaha recently met in Mililani after 55 long years.
Gladys Oshiro Akasaki, a longtime resident of Mililani, met with Jean Murakami Kudaishi, now residing in Pullman, Wash. and Edith Yamanaka Yamaguchi, now a resident of Manoa on O‘ahu. All attended Kekaha Elementary School from kindergarten until Gladys and Edith moved to Honolulu in the sixth grade. Jean stayed back on Kaua‘i.
Gladys returned when she was a sophomore and graduated from Waimea High School in 1951. Edith stayed in Honolulu and graduated from Roosevelt High School. Jean stayed in Kekaha and also graduated from Waimea High School.
After that they all went their separate ways. Jean stayed on Kaua‘i while Gladys went to nursing School in Honolulu and Edith graduated from the University of Hawai‘i with a degree in education.
The trio did not see each other until the day they got together at Zippy’s in the Mililani Town Center. They spent the visit catching up on old times and hope to meet again soon.
