HANALEI — In Hawai‘i, music has always been much more than simple entertainment, it has also long been a key to understanding Hawaiian culture.
Renowned performers and prolific filmmakers Eddie and Myrna Kamae head to Hanalei for a special showing of their film “Words, Earth and Aloha: The Source of Hawaiian Music” next Tuesday, July 11.
The free showing takes place at 6:30 p.m. in the Hanalei Elementary School cafetorium.
The one-hour documentary from the award-winning duo explores the sources of a complex tradition, from early chants and the 19th century gospel influences, to the work of composers who flourished between the 1870s and 1920s, for whom Hawaiian was still a first language. Some of the footage and interviews were filmed in the Hanalei area.
After the showing, Eddie Kamae is scheduled to offer a brief musical performance and sign autographs. Kamae was co-founder of the legendary band Sons of Hawai‘i. He later became a filmmaker, researcher and key figure in the Hawaiian cultural renaissance.
