Isaac Castillo of the Waimea High School baseball team made an impression at the Speed & Quickness baseball clinic that wrapped up yesterday.
Keali‘i Aguiar, the Kaua‘i Speed & Quickness coordinator, said that former University of Hawai‘i coach Carl Furutani was impressed by not only the Menehune’s baseball talent, but by his “inter-personal skills.”
“They don’t make them like him anymore,” Aguiar said Furutani told him. Castillo did not hesitate to jump in and help the coaches and former UH players shag balls and clean up following the Saturday sessions.
Jett Jasper, a Kaua‘i High School player, was also on hand to work with Speed & Quickness coach Rich Miano Sunday morning.
The clinic wrapped up the summer series, but Miano said they are planning a big football clinic for later this summer.
“This is going to be big,” Aguiar said. “We’ve got some of the biggest names in football coaches coming over for this event.”
Despite a strong sports calendar, Aguiar was pleased with the turnout on Saturday and Sunday. He said about 50 players came Saturday with about another dozen taking in the Sunday clinic at Isenberg Field.
UH players who took part in the training included Derek Honma, Daryl Masanda, Rory Pico, Corey Ishigo, Paul Ah Yat and Todd Koishigawa.
