Editor’s note: This list of names of is being reprinted to correct several errors. Also the names of 1st Sgt. Joseph Q. Smith USMC (Retd) and Sgt. Maj Bud M. WHite USMC (Retd) were omitted from the caption of the picture labeled The Price of Freedom.
The inspiration for this memorial was the ceremony conducted by Gov. Linda Lingle to Honor the 27 Marines and the 1 Navy Hospital Corpsman of the 3rd Marine Regiment who lost their lives in a helicopter accident in Iraq in January 2005 while participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. We mourn their deaths and celebrate their lives through the Kauai Veterans Memorial.

I find it an honor To call these names
Each one a hero, As they rrest in their game
A Navy corpsman, and 27 U.S. Marines
As a unit, they made quite a team
They were each doing their job,
Fulfilling their mission
When their chopper went down
They became part of our Corps tradition
Their craft went down, January 2005
The good Lord must have wanted them all
For none of them did survive
So here we are, this Memorial Day
As we salute our fallen brethren
We wish them well, for a job well done
As they continue their tour in Heaven
