Junior ROTC students at Waimea High School credited strong guidance from instructor Maj. Victor Aguilar (ret.) and hard work for the ROTC scholarships and service academy appointments awarded to eight seniors this month.
Cadets Christopher Aguilar and Laura Hudson each received offers from West Point and the Air Force Academy. Both will attend the Air Force Academy in the fall.
Five cadets received four-year scholarships to the University of Portland: Erna Agmata, Jesse Choi, Brandon Dannog, Scott Martin and Sheila Ramos. Cadet Lambert Guirao received a four-year scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical and Engineering School.
Each academy appointment is worth up to $500,000, and each four-year ROTC scholarship is worth between $180,000 and $185,000.
Other cadets are going straight into military service. Reynold Dela Cruz, Matthew Jimenez and Froilan Tyler will join the Marine Corps, and Natasha Acosta, Frances Pascua and Jenny-Jane Rumbaoa will join the Hawai‘i Army National Guard.
