Lihu‘e’s Darryl Izumo managed to stay in the top five of the Professional Bowlers Association West Region through four events, despite finishing in 29th place at Westy’s Garden Lanes Open in Garden City, Idaho, on Sunday.
Izumo has 43,966 points so far this season and trails leader Ben Laughlin of Maricopa, Ariz., by less than 1,000 points.
Izumo also remained as the only Hawai‘i bowler in the top 30 of the west region.
The Lihu‘e Bowling Center general manager is also in sixth place in the northwest region.
Izumo is currently second in earnings with $2,950 after four events.
The next PBA West event is the Brunswick and AMF Open in Visalia, Calif., from May 12-14.
All-Girls rodeo ropes up roses on Mother’s Day
The third Kaua‘i All-Girls Rodeo is set for 10 a.m. on Sunday at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu (about a mile past the Hyatt).
Admission is free and everyone is invited to enjoy the show.
There’s ample seating in the open air bleachers. Rosie’s Lunch Wagon will be on hand with local style food and beverages, and logo T-shirts are available for sale.
The cowgirls will compete in six fast-paced events on horseback: barrel racing, break away roping, goat tying, dally team roping, pole bending and steer undecorating.
The cowgirls plan on an exciting day filled with fast-paced rodeo competition. Kaua‘i’s YMCA is the primary sponsor of the All-Girls Rodeo Association.

Deadlines for summer basketball approaching
ZZ Youth Basketball and the Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i would like to remind everyone that the deadline for the summer basketball program is fast approaching.
Registration deadline for all age groups is May 15.
The 14-and-under girls league begins on May 19.
The 12-and-under boys and girls leagues commence on June 9.
The 16-and-under boys and girls hit the court on June 19 and the 19-and-under boys and girls leagues start up on June 19 as well.

Sakamoto Invitational time trials this weekend
Time trials for the annual Sakamoto Invitational are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon both days, admission is free. The Sakamoto Invitational is May 26-28 in Kahului, Maui. The state championships are set for June 9-12 at Central O‘ahu’s pool.
Mokihana Aquatics, Swim Kauai Aquatics and Island Pacific Aquatics from Barbers Point will be at the meet.
Mokihana will also be presenting a special ceremony for its seniors.
