Former Kapa’a High School athlete Liz Kain is making a big splash at Sonoma State University for track and field.
Kain ran to a personal best in the 400 meters at the UC-Davis Aggie Open on Saturday with a time of 58.82, which was good for second place.
She also ran a strong leadoff leg on the 4×400 relay team, helping teammates Roxanne Sechler, April Montgomery, and Alena Cook to a time of 3:59.85, good for fourth best on the SSU all-time list.
Kain is a sophomore at Sonoma State and primarily takes part in sprinting events.
Up next for Kain, who was a star track and field athlete at Kapa’a High School, is the Bay Area Blast Off meet on Saturday at Berkeley, Calif.
The year culminates with the NCAA Championships on May 25-27 in Emporia Kansas.
Last year as a freshman, Kain ran a personal best of 59.11 to qualify for the final in the 400 meters at the CCAA Conference Championships.
In the final, Kain placed eighth to score points in the conference meet as a freshman.
She also recorded a lifetime best in the 4×400 with a leadoff leg of 58.8.
