Continuous island entertainment with loads of food, craft and game booths, a beer garden, contests and lots of sporting events. That’s what you can expect this weekend at the 28th annual Waimea Town Celebration.
At the Old Waimea Sugar Mill, the fun starts on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and on Saturday at 10 a.m. Free entertainment continues until 11 p.m. both nights.
Saturday events include a fun run, canoe race, rodeo, ‘ukulele contest, and ice cream eating contest. Check out the lei contest and cultural demonstrations at the West Kaua‘i Visitor Center Friday and Saturday. Don’t forget to collect the latest exclusive t-shirt design for the event.

Waimea Town Celebration events: Saturday, Feb 25
Kilohana Long Distance Canoe Race — Traditional Hawaiian Outrigger Canoe Racing along the Waimea shoreline. First event of the Garden Island Canoe Racing Association season.
Start times for the races Saturday morning — 9 a.m. for women, 10:30 a.m. for men. The course depends on ocean conditions, visible from the shore at Waimea near the pier. Finished around11:30. Hosted by Kilohana Canoe Club of Waimea. Free for spectators.
29th Annual Captain Cook Caper Fun Run 10, 5, & 2k Run with a start time of 7 a.m. Registration available at the information booth near the stage area Friday night between 6 and 10 p.m. There will be shuttle service Saturday to start lines from Waimea Plantation Cottages.
The last bus leaves at 6:15 a.m.
The race takes place on the highway with the start line for the 10k race at the Navy Housing Gate; 5k at Kekaha Neighborhood Center, and the 2k at Kikia‘ola Boat Harbor entrance. Entry fee includes t-shirt. Hosted by the Waimea High School Track Team. Free for spectators.
9th Annual ‘Ukulele Contest — Amateur strummers show their stuff with Hawai‘i’s favorite stringed instrument on the main stage at the Waimea Town Celebration. Starts about 1 p.m. (check the schedule at the info booth). Grand prize includes a brand new ‘ukulele. Sign up at the information booth Saturday. Sponsored by American Savings Bank.

7th Annual First Hawaiian Bank Hat Lei Contest — Creativity reigns as children and adults show off their lei contest entries exhibited Friday from noon to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m to 4 p.m., at the West Kaua‘i Technology & Visitor Center. Hawaiian cultural demonstrations on the lanai from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Entry forms for lei contest available at the Visitor Center. Event sponsored by First Hawaiian Bank, Kaua‘i Economic Development Board, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority, County of Kaua‘i and the West Kaua‘i Business & Professional Association.

7th Annual Lappert’s Ice Cream Eating Contest — Age groups from young to old compete for the title of the fastest ice cream eaters in the west in front of the Waimea Town Celebration Stage starting at noon. Sign up until 11 a.m. at the WKBPA Soda Booth on Saturday. Limited seating in each category. Contest starts about noon.
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Feb. 24-26
Mountainball Tournament — Great play at the Waimea Athletic Field on the corner of Huakai and Hwy 50. Action starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. on Saturday and championships on Sunday starting at 8 a.m. Proceeds go towards the non-profit charity of the winning teams’ choices. No admission for spectators.

Waimea Round-Up Rodeo — Events take place behind the old Waimea Dairy (between Waimea & Kekaha).
The Slack / Elimination Roping takes place Friday from 2 p.m. (no admission this day only) until dark.
On Saturday, the grand entry and flag ceremony begins the day’s activities with recognition of the Hall of Fame Cowboys starting at noon. Fun events from Po‘o wai u to Barrels are featured and refreshments are available. Spectators are advised to bring sunscreen, hats and enjoy the family fun. Admission is $3 / under 12 free. Benefits the Kaua‘i Keiki & High School Rodeo Association.
