The contestant-recruitment deadline is Friday for candidates for the title of the 2006 Miss Kauai Filipina, pageant officials said in a press release.
This year’s Miss Kauai Filipina will have the distinction of serving as the queen during a year of much celebration in the Filipino community.
Filipinos across the state in 2006 are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Filipino contract workers, and the waves of immigrants from the Philippines who followed.
With that backdrop, leaders of the Kauai Filipino Community Council are seeking contestants for the crown that will be placed on the head of the winner in early May. The pageant is May 7.
Young ladies from seniors in high school to age 27 are eligible to participate in the 48th Annual Miss Kauai Filipina Scholarship Pageant, to be held at the Kaua’i War Memorial Convention Hall.
This is the Kauai Filipino Community Council’s (KFCC) major fund-raiser, with proceeds given as scholarships to graduating students of Filipino ancestry who are furthering their education.
The pageant will be the highlight of a weekend of celebration, KFCC leaders said.
Council leaders, in conjunction with members of the Kauai Centennial Celebration Committee, will be having a Barrio Fiesta on May 6 and 7 at the convention hall.
As a part of the centennial celebration, the new queen will be awarded $2,500 and various other prizes.
