LIHU’E — A fire erupted at a home on Apapane Street in the Ulu Ko subdivision early yesterday morning causing around $50,000 in damages to a single family residence, states a Kauai Fire Department press release.
The one person in the home was able to escape unharmed.
Police dispatch alerted Kaua’i Fire Department officials to the fire around 2 a.m. and firefighters and rescue specialists from Lihu’e and Kalaheo fire stations responded.
According to Battalion Chief Russell Yee, the fire was under control within 15 minutes, but it took about three hours to completely extinguish the blaze because of its interior nature.
“It appeared to have started at ground level, moved up the siding and slowly traveled up to the eaves and into the crawl space below the ceiling,” explained Yee, in the press release.
According to the release, fire-fighters had to remove parts of the roof and siding to determine the “seat” (hottest spot) of the fire. “Once they found it, they were able to quickly extinguish the fire,” Yee said in the release.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
