Charlene Quinones was making sure there were enough jugs of water as Kaua‘i High leaders played host to Kalani as the O‘ahu team members and coaches camped out on the campus for a preseason boys’ basketball tournament. Winston Kawamoto, coach for Mokihana Aquatics, was trying to get some underwater photos, but that afternoon rain fogged up his camera equipment.
Waimea junior-varsity coach Bobby Kamakele had his team members sitting among other members of the good-sized crowd, and the girls worked clipboards through both the JV and varsity games. Kori Sakamoto is an old hand at the finer points of scoring, and was helping a teammate at the scorer’s table. Coach Clarence Sales was on hand, as was coach Neil Fagarang (when is the Eastside/Hanama‘ulu showdown?) as they came to watch the games. Dave Hamamura was also there, helping with Coach Angela Lopez’s squad. Even Clyde Vito came to watch, sitting with Sam Arashiro, whose daughter Cory Arashiro was playing with the Raider varsity squad. Earlier in the day, MaBel Fujiuchi and all her Kauai Economic Opportunity, Inc., ‘ohana had their groundbreaking of an emergency shelter for the homeless that was blessed by Mother Nature. Congratulations. Was nice to chat with Mike Fayé of Kikiaola Construction, and Gary Mackler and James Nishida, whose crews did a great job. It’s always a treat to chat with Mary Thronas, and state Sen. Gary Hooser, D-Kaua‘i-Ni‘ihau, who had his daughter Kelli-Rose Hooser with him for the event.
