Mixed results in KIF paddling

Three different teams found themselves at the top of the list in the KIF’s preseason long distance paddling competition at Nawiliwili on Saturday.
In the varsity girls contest, Kaua’i (26:52.16) ousted Kapa’a (27:51.23), the defending champions, by almost a minute.
Kula placed third with a time of 29:24.46.
It was a battle between the private schools in the boys race, as Kula (23:08.69) edged Island (23:28.01), by nearly 20 seconds.
Kapa’a finished not too far behind with a time of 23:56.52.
The Warriors triumphed in the mixed competition, with a 25:40.58.
Kula (26:33.51) and Island (26:57.51) came in second and third, respectively.
Kaua’i dominated in the JV races, taking both the girls and mixed contests.
The Red Raiders, who fielded two girls’ squads, took the top two spots with times of 12:08.73 and 12:39.90.
Kapa’a (13:04.18), Island (13:17.95), and Kula (13:39.90) rounded out the top five.
Kapa’a ousted Kaua’i (11:38.68) in the JV boys race, tallying a time of 11:18.27.
The Red Raiders (11:55.86) climbed to the top of the mixed contest over Kula (11:59.12).
Island (12:18.58), Kapa’a (14:45.89), and Kaua’i #1 (15:01.42) claimed spots three through five.
The KIF paddling regular season begins on January 21 at the Wailua River.
Hasegawa in the net, not Gaitos
In last Saturday’s shutout win over Waimea, the goalie for Kaua’i was Tamalyn Hasegawa, instead of K.C. Gaitos.
Waimea coaches wanted
Waimea High School is looking for a tennis coach for the upcoming season. Also, The Menehune football program is inviting interested individuals to apply for a coaching position for next season. Shamrock heading to Kaua’i in March
Noted mixed martial arts fighter (MMA) Frank Shamrock will be coming down to attend the Garden Island Cage match #3 on March 26.
