No surprises in cross country

The Kaua’i Wishard and same runners gathered at the top of the KIF cross country world in the first meet of the 2005-06 season.

junior Chelsea Smith-Waimea senior Scott Martin, who were both undefeated last season, started off this year with victories at Kula High and Intermediate on Saturday.

However, despite her first-place finish, Smith-Wishard’s team was narrowly defeated by a single point to Waimea.

It was the same story in the boys’ race, with the individual winner’s team being edged out by a slim margin (2 points). Island School, last year’s KIF champions, utilized a strong team effort for the triumph.

Martin (17:46) was followed by his brother, Nathan (18:33.86), Island School’s Ben Baldwin (19:38.59) and Chris Marsh (19:40.33), and Kapa’a’s Chance Bukoski (19:47.93) in the top five boys standings. Smith-Wishard (21:25.99) saw familiar faces behind her, with Waimea’s Rachel Martin (22:50.66), Kapa’a’s Alex Pond (23:01.90), Kula’s Gillian Pickett (23:12.11), and Waimea’s Carolyn Hoeckman (24:16.04) rounding out the top five runners.

A list of the top 20 runners is listed in the scoreboard on page B2. KIF cross country trots to Kapa’a High School on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
