10 inches of rain falls on Wai’ale’ale

Nearly 10 inches of rain fell atop Mt. Wai’ale’ale during the 24-hour period ending yesterday, and over six inches fell near the Hanalei River over the same period, according to National Weather Service statistics.

Kuhio Highway in the vicinity of the one-lane bridge over the Hanalei River was closed for several hours late Saturday night and early Sunday morning, as a severe thunderstorm system was nearly stationery over the island.

A flash-flood warning was issued Saturday night for O’ahu and Kaua’i., and some sections of O’ahu received over three inches of rain in around an hour.

Flash-flood watches for Kaua’i and Ni’ihau were canceled yesterday.
