Cowgirl Challenge Series opens Sunday
The Cowgirl Challenge Series of the Kaua‘i All Girls Rodeo Association starts Sunday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. at the CJM Country Stables arena in Po‘ipu.
Admission is free, and the KAGRA invites everyone to come and enjoy the action.
A lunch wagon as well as logo tee-shirts will be available to supplement the fast-moving action and competition.
Members of the KAGRA range in age from grade schoolers to grandmothers and include some of the top rated cowgirls in the state.
In addition to the rodeos, the girls also participate in community events, most recently winning the Equestrian Unit First Place award in the Koloa Plantation Days Parade.
The All Girls Rodeo is sponsored by the YMCA of Kaua‘i.

Ikaika Basketball to defend Girls U14 crown
Coach Clay Tang and the Ikaika Basketball Girls Under 14 team will return to the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center to defend their title in the Second Annual KYBA Girls 14 Under basketball tournament.
Teams will take to the floor on Thursday, Aug 18 through Saturday, Aug. 20 with the championship scheduled to tip off at noon on Saturday.
Five Kaua‘i teams have committed to take on Ikaika for the title including Gee’s Angels coached by Cecil Gee, Wailua coached by Talbert Tacbian, Team Swish coached by Dave Hamamura, the Westside Hornets coached by Maynard Shea, and Waimea coached by Bobby Kamakele.
Thursday night’s schedule calls for three games starting at 6 p.m. when Gee’s Angels tangles with the Westside Hornets at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
That game will be followed by Waimea taking on Wailua with the defending Ikaika Basketball highlighting the finale against Team Swish.
Friday night’s games also begin starting at 6 p.m. with Saturday games starting at a.m., and the championship tipping off at noon.
Teams in Pool “A” include Gee’s Angels, Westside Hornets, and Team Swish with Pool “B” teams including Wailua, Waimea, and Ikaika Basketball.
According to tournament director Karen Matsumoto, this year’s games should prove interesting as most of the Ikaika Basketball girls have moved up with a lot of new players in the ranks.
