Summer internship with 49ers for Singletary
HONOLULU — University of Hawai`i defensive line coach Vantz Singletary has accepted an internship with the National Football League’s San Francisco 49ers this summer.
Singletary will be working closely with 49er head coach Mike Nolan, defensive coordinator Billy Davis, and defensive line coach Gary Emanuel. Also, his uncle, Mike Singletary, is the 49ers’ assistant head coach/line-backers.
“This is always an exciting opportunity for me,” Singletary said. “This will be my first time interacting with my uncle, Mike, and getting a taste of the 3-4 defensive scheme.”
The Houston-native’s first real hands-on experience came in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers camp. From there, Singletary attended both the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers camps in 1998 and 2000, respectively. The past four years he spent the summer with the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans, San Diego Chargers, and last year with the Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL’s Minority Coaching Fellowship has been around about two decades, and it’s the seventh one that Singletary is attending. Each NFL team sorts through about 300 applications each year narrowing it down to mainly three candidates – offense, defense, and special teams. “The contacts you make at these camps and the chance to improve your craft are invaluable,” Singletary said. “It is almost like being a graduate assistant in college as you are actively participating in practices, staff meetings, and evaluations.” Singletary is attending the 49ers camp in mid-July and returns to Honolulu August 3.
