Hokule‘a’s sails
My heart is very sad that the Polynesian Voyaging Society has had the gall to change the design of the Hokulea sails. When she sailed into Hanalei Bay, I did not recognize her. A local female DJ remarked that the voyaging canoe looks like a “Waikiki Booze Cruise.” We have since the beginning respected the purpose of the Polynesian Voyaging Society. If the Lauhala sail is weather torn, why can’t nylon or canvas be used in the “crab claw” design? It really surprises me that you felt modern society necessitated a change. Where is the honor and pride of the Society?
All Polynesian craft that have transversed the Pacific Ocean, (except for Samoa, Tonga and Mangareva) have used the “sprit”, or more commonly called the “crab claw” sail. At a previous stop at Hanalei Bay, she was in full dress, and the pride swelled within, not only for the Hokule‘a, but for all she prepresents in respect for our Kupuna.
What’s up, Nainoa? Have traditions changed when I wasn’t looking? The Hokule‘a returns to Hanalei June 26. Check it out.
