James Melvin Alston
James Melvin Alston of Kapa‘a died at home on April 28, 2005, at the age of 78.
Born in Norfolk, Va., on May 10, 1926, he retired from the U.S. Army as a Specialist E5.
He is survived by his wife: Yuko Alston of Kapa‘a; brother-in-law: Ichiro (Yukiko) Yamauchi of Japan; two sisters-in-law: Kazuko idako of japan and Michiko Horikoshi of Japan; and several cousins.
Private services were held. Arrangements were handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Mildred Miller
Mildred Laycock Miller died in her sleep on April 29, 2005.
She was born in Little Rock, Ark., on Feb. 24, 1906. Her daughter, Martie Miller and her husband, Mitch Bulsford were at her side at their home in Browns Valley, Calif.
Mildred is survived by her daughter, Martie, grandson Arjuna Miller, great-grandson, Alexander Arjuna Miller, great granddaughter, Piper Leslie Anne Miller, a niece Leilani Bowen and a nephew Doug Pratt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Edward Miller, the retired manager of Hawaiian Canneries of Kapa‘a in 1968.
Mildred had taught at various schools on Kaua‘i since 1930. She closed Ko‘olau School, taught and was librarian and vice principal at Kapaa High & Elementary School. She also taught at Lihue School and Wilcox.
After her retirement as Vice Principal of Kauai High School, Mildred volunteered at the YWCA, Women’s Center, and at the Kauai Museum.
There will be a graveside ceremony on Kauai in July 2005.
