PO‘IPU – The Kaua‘i High School boys golf team are all going to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) state championships.
So are the Red Raider girls golf team, both clinching the KIF titles for their respective divisions during last weekend’s play at the Wailua Golf Course.
But, what was at stake in the final KIF golf match, Saturday, was who would fill in the four open slots that were available.
Sean Ogawa, who topped the individualist play in last week’s match by finishing with a three-under-par 69 was victimized by the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course to end the day with an 81 (39-42) to fill in the third of four open slots with a qualifying round total of 150.
The battle between Kapa‘a’s No. 1 and 2 golfers, Jet Levinthol and Travis Toguchi continued at Po‘ipu, both golfers qualifying for the first two open slots, but when the dust settled, Levinthol was clearly the top Warrior with a two-stroke advantage over Toguchi. Levinthol qualified for the states with a 146 with Toguchi making the cut three strokes back at 149.
Kaua‘i’s Nikko Tacsiat was in a battle for the remaining slot, and having a bad second hole didn’t help as he was nudged out of the running on a match-the-card following Saturday’s play, Tacsiat finishing the round a stroke back of Waimea’s Noel Torres, but tying at 154 over the two-week play period.
Cory French topped the Kaua‘i team play with a commanding 145 followed by Bret Netzer who carded 148, Kellen Watabu who finished at 151, Michael Garcia who ended at 153, and Chad Nonaka’s 156.
Miki Ueoka topped the Kaua‘i girls with a 153 followed by Shelcie Takenouchi at 156, Terra Bell at 165, Mary Akutagawa at 167, and Kimberly Yama at 169.
The David S. Ishii Foundation HHSAA girls state championships are scheduled for May 10-11 at the Dunes at Maui Lani, on Maui, with the David S. Ishii Foundation HHSAA boys state championships following on May 17-18 at the Wailea Emerald Golf Course on Maui.
