Gated = safe
I was amazed to read in the Friday, March 25 issue of The Garden Island that our mayor. confronted with a long list of serious problems, i.e. a) rampant drug use and property crime, b) a complete lack of affordable housing, c) an absurdly bloated budget, d) a Tax Revolt and subsequent lawsuit paid for with public monies, to thwart the will of our people, e) solid waste problems, and f) Disintegrating roads, superficially patched after each rain event, just to enumerate a few of these problems, manages to have his attention diverted to perceived evils of gated communities. The mayor may dream of living in the 60s, but the simple truth is these are much different times. As this is written, I cannot think of a single friend or acquaintance on this island unaffected by drug usage or property theft.
Personally, gated communities had no special appeal for our family until we were burglarized three times. The final straw was the theft of the outboard engine from our boat. We realize that the Kaua‘i police have a tough and demanding job, and they are to be commended for the work they do. However, in this case no stolen items were ever recovered.
In conclusion, when government can no longer protect the public or their property, the citizen should be allowed to take any reasonable initiative he deems necessary to protect himself, his family and his property. If that means living in a gated community, so be it. That right should not be abrogated.
