KAPA‘A — The road through the first round of KIF girls’ basketball will now go through Kapa‘a, after last nights win over the Menehune, 47-36.

Foul shooting played a huge part in the first half, as Kapa‘a was able to convert for the early lead.
Kapa‘a senior Samdi Makepa played huge in the second quarter with three buckets, which gave the Warriors the 29-19 halftime advantage.
In the third period, Waimea found no success from anywhere on the court, which allowed Kapa‘a to increase its lead, thanks to Joliann Arzadon and Kieren Pond. With 1:30 to go in the third frame, Waimea freshman Josey Jacinto banked in a three-point bomb for her team’s first points of the second half, but Kapa‘a still led by double digits at 36-22.
Waimea made a late charge in the fourth quarter, as Moani Durant caught fire with two straight lay-ins and Mallorie Hepa’s rebound put back cut the margin down to 10 points (42-32) with just five minutes to go. The Menehune managed to get just one point closer for the remainder of the game, as Melissa Moreno’s shot cut the lead to nine (43-34) with just over two minutes to play.
Kapa‘a’s Pond and Kennilyn Nakamura sealed the game with two points each in the final moments of the contest.
Arzadon led Kapa‘a in the scoring department with 10 points, followed by Nakamura with nine, and Carvalho chipped in with eight points.
Durant led the Menehune attack with 11 points. Cheri Kua, Josey Jacinto, and Joanna Jacinto each contributed with five points for Waimea.
