The Top Kaua‘i Island Utilities Cooperative announced Saturday the results of the organization’s annual Board of Directors election.
vote getter was Peter Yukimura, president of Koa Trading with 3,835 votes. Current boardmember Saburo “Sab” Yoshioka received 3,273, and former state Land Board member Phil Tacbian 2,594. Thomas Noyes was the fourth candidate.
Yukimura, Yoshioka and Tacbian were all elected to three-year terms.
Yukimura and Yoshioka were nominated by a citizens’ nominating committee, and Tacbian was nominated by member petition.
Director Walt Barnes, has decided not to run for reelection.
Carryover board members include Gregg Gardiner, chair, whose term expires in March 2006; Ron Kouchi, vice-chair, whose term expires in March 2006; Ray Paler, secretary, whose term expires March 2007; Susan Stayton, whose term expires in March 2006; and Dee Crowell and Jim Mayfield, whose terms expire in March 2007.
H.A. “Dutch” Achenbach was named as the new president and chief executive officer of KIUC in January.
The cooperative has over 22,500 customers.
Board members voted not to fill the seat vacated by Dennis Esaki, who resigned last year to devote more time to family and business interests.
There were eight board members up to the election due to Esaki’s resignation. Now there are nine.
Members of the electric utility cooperative were sent ballot packets that included a ballot, secret ballot envelope, postage-paid return envelope, and a voter-information guide that includes information on the candidates, proposed bylaw changes, and a copy of the current and proposed amended bylaws.
Ballots were accepted up to yesterday.
A general membership meeting was called for Saturday afternoon to discuss changes to the KIUC bylaws.
KIUC management and Omaha-based Election Systems & Software, Inc. tallied the ballots.
