State Attorney General Mark Bennett will discuss crime and drug legislation pending before the state Legislature at the monthly meeting of the Governor’s Kaua‘i Advisory Committee.
The meeting is tomorrow, Thursday, March 10, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Civic Center’s Mo‘ikeha Building. Bennett will brief committee members and the public on the Law Enforcement Coalition’s legislative initiatives relating to crime. He will also address other legislative initiatives proposed this session.
“Increased crime, including the illegal use of drugs and alcohol in our community, must be addressed,” said Laurie Yoshida, Gov. Linda Lingle’s Kaua‘i liaison. “The (Kaua‘i) Police Department has made a significant number of arrests, but they need more tools, including better laws, to assist them in keeping our communities safe.”
Lingle created advisory committees to give residents on the Neighbor Islands stronger voices in state government. Members of the Kaua‘i Advisory Committee hold monthly public meetings to seek community input, after which they advise Lingle on important issues, budget priorities, and recommendations for state boards and commissions.
The members of the Governor’s Kaua‘i Advisory Committee are Chair James Anakalea, Linda Collins, Laura Cushnie, Kelly Banks Hoen, the Rev. Villamor Galiza, Jerry Ornellas, Barbara Smith, Matt Takata, and Dr. Leo Trinidad.
Anyone requiring special assistance or accommodations to participate at this meeting may call 274-3100. For additional information on Neighbor Island advisory committees, including past-meeting minutes and agendas, please visit the Web site, www.hawaii.gov/gov.
