With the KIF basketball season over, it’s time to take a look at the scoring and three-point leaders for the 2005 campaign.
The KIF champion Kaua‘i High School varsity and junior varsity squads came away with the top point-scorers in senior center Futi Tavana and freshman forward Tyrus Ceria-Lux.
Tavana, who still has the state tournament to go, isn’t done with the season just yet.
Ceria-Lux, a tall and lanky player, has the talent to straight to the varsity level next season, with the graduation of 10 seniors, the most of any KIF team this season.
He averaged just under 11 points per contest this season with a total of 93 points.
Tavana put up hefty numbers this season as well, averaging just under 19 points per game, with 151 total points.
The Red Raider senior will play at the next level, whether it’s basketball or volleyball. During a contest this season, BYUH head basketball coach Ken Wagner made an appearance to take a first-hand look at Tavana. Luckily for Futi, he played his best game this season, notching 29 points and dominating the middle with numerous boards and blocks.
Kaua‘i’s Jeremy Manuel and Waimea’s Chad Barba battled for the second slot, but Manuel held off a late Barba charge. Manuel ended the season with a 12.6 ppg average and Barba averaged 12.4 ppg.
Albert “Speedy Gonzales” Aguila and Coty Salausa, both of Kapa‘a nailed down the second and third spots for JV scoring. Aguila edged his teammate by just two points, averaging 10.3 ppg. Salausa averaged 10.0 ppg.
Warrior senior, Kaylan Dolor and Kaua‘i senior Manuel shared the three-point title this season with six treys apiece. Red Raider shooting guard Josh Bradbury was right behind with five trifectas.
Dolor was the early leader, with the hot hand during the first round of the season, but Manuel caught up during the final round.
The JV ranks saw more three-point success, with Waimea’s Roldan Villanueva and Kaua‘i’s Tyrus Ceria-Lux sharing the honor for the top three-point shooter in the league with nine apiece.
Kapa‘a teammates, Salausa and Aguila were gunslingers as well, with eight treys each.

The KIF champion Kaua‘i High School Red Raider squad (8-0) take off to O‘ahu for the HHSAA boys basketball state tournament from Feb. 23-26. This year’s playoffs will be held at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of the University of Hawai‘i.
