State officials said recently that construction on an northerly extension to the Temporary Kapa‘a Bypass Road will begin today.
Drivers may experience delays near the Olohena Road/Bypass Road intersection, where a roundabout will replace the five-way intersection currently in place.
“Be prepared for traffic delays through the construction period,” which could take up to 18 months, said Steve Kyono, Department of Transportation Kaua‘i district engineer. “When we construct the rotary, (there will be) intermittent periods where traffic will be interrupted.”
The Olohena/Bypass roundabout will be the only area affected, as the rest of the bypass will be constructed on a former haul cane road that will link the current road with Kuhio Highway just south of Haua‘ala Road, and north of Kou Street.
The extension will be one-way southbound from Kuhio Highway, to pick up with the bypass at the intersection, Kyono said.
“The roundabout is a perfectly-suited feature to that section,” Kyono said. “The whole intersection should be revamped,” making traffic flow easier.
