Former state Rep. Peter Apo, who used to represent the North Shore of Kaua‘i, is now the director of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association.
He will speak on how Native Hawaiian concepts are necessary for sustaining the visitor industry in the 21st century in a free talk, “The Hawai‘i Experience — Beyond the Aloha,” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Kaua‘i Community College Performing Arts Center.
Sponsored by the Kaua‘i Visitors Bureau, Kauai Vacation Rentals & Real Estate, Inc., Kaua‘i Marriott Resort & Beach Club, Kaua‘i Community College and others, the event is part of Kauaian Days.
Apo’s talk is designed to instill in listeners a deeper understanding of community for the good of all. His provocative and positive message is of hope and celebration of the uniqueness of the Hawai‘i experience, organizers said.
Apo brings an in-depth formula for creating host, guest and place in conversation and action, organizers said.
He will share the concept of ho‘okipa (hospitality), a specific plan for incorporating Hawaiian values into the operating culture of Hawai‘i’s public and private institutions, and for moving Hawaiian culture to the core of Hawai‘i’s hospitality industry.
It is also about creating and maintaining a growth curve that contributes to a better life for everyone, he said.
After his formal presentation, he will open up the discussion for questions from the audience.
