The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the county Agency on Elderly Affairs, seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Bunk bed and linens are all this family seeks
Joy and Dean had to sell most of their furniture and their household items when they lost their home about four months ago. Their landlord had sold the rental they were living in, and the new owners planned to move in. Dean is a hard worker and tries to do all he can for his family. Joy got laid off because the company she worked for went out of business. She is looking for full-time employment, but so far has had no success. The family has found temporary housing, and their wish this Christmas is for a bunk bed for the boys and some bed, bath and kitchen linens for the family to use.
Missy needs an ankle brace
Missy prided herself on being a very independent lady until she suffered a stroke in 1995. She managed to bring herself back to independence in her daily activities. Recently, though, she has been falling a lot, and her physical therapist noted an ankle brace would bring the stability back to her ankle. Being unemployed, she is on Medicaid and unable to afford this $44.50 item. Getting one for Christmas would make all the difference in her world.
