The Garden Island newspaper and Zonta Club of Kauai have again teamed up to try to make the holidays brighter for needy senior citizens, children and families. The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund has been helping Kaua‘i families for over 30 years. Letters are sent to island agencies such as Easter Seals and the county Agency on Elderly Affairs, seeking referrals of clients who are most in need. Last year, the community’s generous donations helped 153 adults and 140 children. This year, even more requests for assistance have been received. The Christmas Fund volunteers use monetary donations to purchase gift certificates and gift cards that are distributed to families and individuals.
Because of the logistical problems in distributing donated items, only monetary donations can be accepted.
Toddler’s parents in Iraq; lives with aunt and uncle
Sarah is an 18-month-old whose parents were both sent to Iraq. For now, she is living with her maternal aunt and uncle.
Because of a speech delay, Sarah is receiving Early Intervention services from Easter Seals. Her aunt and uncle would love to give her something to smile about and could use some help making this a nice Christmas despite everything Sarah’s going through.
Tricycle and shoes are parents’ requests
Andy and Mary have had a very hard life. Right now, they are really trying their best to attain the goal of self-sufficiency so that one day they may be able to own a home. Both parents are working and try real hard to be good providers for their girls.
Still, times are tough. All they ask for this Christmas is for books and a tricycle for two—year-old Clarise and maybe a pair of shoes for six-year-old Raynette.
Dad wants to be with family
Albert moved to Kaua‘i ahead of his family in hopes of making a better life for all of them. He has found employment and is trying to save so he can bring his family over. He would really like to have them here for Christmas but has not saved enough yet. He won’t be able to buy presents for anyone because he needs to save all that he can. All he wants is to have his family with him and to give the children a better education.
