Johnella Basa-Pereira of Waimea recently completed a term of service at a graduation ceremony in Perry Point, Md. Basa-Pereira is part of 149 members of Service Year X graduating with AmeriCorps-National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) Northeast Region campus.
Since January of this year, Basa-Pereira has been stationed out of the Northeast Region campus, which is located in Perry Point and serves communities throughout Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Maine.
Louis Botta, Federal Emergency Management Agency federal coordinating officer, delivered the keynote address at the graduation ceremony. Desiree Sayle, USA Freedom Corps director, delivered a message from President Bush. Merlene Maczyck, national director of AmeriCorps-NCCC, also attended. AmeriCorps-NCCC members range in age from 18 to 24. They are required to complete 1,700 hours of community-service in projects covering the environment, education, public safety, other unmet human needs, and disaster relief.
At the end of their 10-month service term, they receive $4,725 to help pay for college, student loans, vocational school, and other education expenses. AmeriCorps programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency.
