Planning Commission
I agree with a previous letter that the Planning Commission hasn’t taken good care of Kauai residents.
The return has definitely not been worth the investments of several developments that the Commission approved. These decisions would almost be acceptable if the County got a major financial “thank you” from the developers but that hasn’t happened. Kauai gets leftovers.
Exhibit A: Has anyone from the Planning Commission recently tried to find a parking space anywhere in the Po‘ipu Beach area? Seems like there’s an overabundance of rental cars in the few small parking lots. Plus, “No Parking” signs take up space that could be used for additional parking.
The Southside resort/condo projects, A & B, et al., should be required to build and maintain free public parking areas for beach access. And if the structures end up 2-stories high, local residents should get first dibs on the ground level spaces.

Wow! There seems to be no depth too low that our elected officials won’t go to negate the over 13,000 votes of the people who passed the Ohana Kauai Charter Amendment. Don’t be confused by the legal mumbo jumbo of the County Suing Themselves. This is just an idiotic smokescreen to get the Charter Amendment ruled illegal.
The people have spoken – they want substantial tax relief now.
A groundswell of disenchanted citizens are rallying together and they want change from the business-as-usual policy that they are seeing from those who are now in office.

On Nov. 9th, Lee Cataluna wrote “Nothing funny in a racial slur” in the Honolulu Advertiser. The article was about police commissioner Gonsalves’ reference to Chief Lum as “Hop Sing” and that she hopes “the days of keeping people down by “shorthanding the flaws of their ethnic background…are officially over.” Let us hope that she is right.
She ended her article by calling for Gonsalves’ resignation “to put an end to this distasteful episode.” There is another way to look at this. Police Lum has given the people of Kaua‘i an outstanding example of forgiveness. He is willing to put the episode behind him, and work with commissioner Gonsalves to serve the people of Kaua‘i. We all know that Gonsalves made a mistake. We all make mistakes. Let’s hope that this is the end of it for our beautiful island. I don’t see Lum as a weak victim in this situation. I see him as a strong model for forgiving others’ mistakes that we can follow and show our keiki, as we continue to teach them ethnic respect.
Hawai‘i has a great tradition of forgiveness in ho‘oponopono. It takes a big heart and clear mind to forgive. Kudos to Police Chief Lum.
