South Africa’s Retief Goosen returns to the PGA Grand Slam of Golf for the second time. His first adventure in Kaua‘i gave him a second-place finish in 2001, behind Tiger Woods.
Goosen qualified for the PGA Grand Slam by winning the 104th U.S. Open Championship on June 21 at Shinnecock Hills in Southhampton, N.Y. Goosen finished with a 1-over-par 71, good for a 4-under-par 276 total and a 2-stroke victory over Phil Mickelson, with whom he was locked in a back nine duel until the left-hander double-bogeyed the 71st hole. He secured his second career major championship and a second Open championship in four years.
Goosen and Els are the only international players to capture the U.S. Open since 1981, when Australia’s David Graham won at Merion.
Goosen is 35 years old and was born in Pietersburg, South Africa. He turned pro in 1990.
