WAIMEA — With a convincing straight set win over the Menehune last night, 25-15, 25-12, the Red Raider girls moved one step closer to the KIF crown, with just one match to go, with Waimea traveling to Kapa‘a to face the Warriors on Saturday.
If the Warriors win, then they force a playoff for the second round title with the Red Raiders. If Waimea wins, then Kaua‘i wins the second round and the KIF title. The Kaua‘i boys have already wrapped up the KIF crown.
The Kaua‘i girls jumped out of the gates early, as Kehau Judd and Auika Muragin slammed home two kills to give Kaua‘i a 7-4 lead. Waimea’s Mallorie Hepa and Banana Kajiwara kept things close with a kill and an ace. Red Raider Tina Moger got into the act with two kills of her own to give Kaua‘i a commanding 18-11 lead. Kaua‘i’s Ligaya Malones served an ace to widen the lead at 22-14 and a Nue Wong service error gave Kaua‘i the first game.
The Red Raiders roared the second set as well, as Judd and Malones continued to play well, with help from Moger. Kaua‘i led 13-5 and 21-9 at one point to take control of the set. Waimea’s Robyn Arrington put down a kill to lessen the margin, but Judd took control and her last kill put the game away for Kaua‘i, 25-12.
In JV action, it was all Waimea in both the boys and girls matches. The boys started things off with a 25-12, 25-21 win over the Red Raiders. The Menehune girls took three sets to dismantle Kaua‘i, 24-25, 25-22, 15-6.
