The Kaua‘i Keiki & High School Rodeo Association (KKHSRA) held their second rodeo of their 2004-2005 season this past Sunday at CJM Country Stables in Po‘ipu.
Girls ruled the Jr. Wrangler Division. The calf mugging team of Alanna Morris and Jessica Falque ruled the event tying down their calf in a screaming 17.38, posting a time two seconds faster than the second place team of Kelli Carveiro and Kalani Grace.
Jessica Falque was lit up “hot” on Sunday also winning the breakaway roping event with Marcus Shimogawa placing second. The goat tying event was won by Jessica Falque with Kelli Carveiro placing second and Taylor Ludington taking third place honors.
Marcus Shimogawa schooled the girls by winning barrel racing and pole bending events and also won the dally team event with Randy Brun as his heeler, placing second in the event was Ashley Rita and Gavin Shimogawa.
The cattle beat the cowboys eight to one in the High School section of po’owai’u with only one cowboy, Randy Brun, catching his steer to win the event. The boys left the door wide open for Randy who posted a time of 34.8 1.
Randy also won the calf roping event with Chaz Rita coming in a close second. Gavin Shimogawa and partner Tyler Duarte won the dally team and the brother, sister team of Brittney and Randy Brun came in second. It was a Brittney Brun & Sumiko Falque day for the girls events with both of them winning two events each, Brit won the break away roping & goat tying, and Sumiko won barrels and poles.
The Keiki section was another case of “girls rule” – yes its true. Winning the barrel racing event was Brittni Ludington-Braun for the 9-11 division and Clint Matias for the 5-8 division with Chad Andrade coming in second. Alexis Vasconcelles ran the perfect pole bending pattern to beat the competition in the 9-11 division. Ross “the roper” Brun slammed down a loop to show the competition how it’s done winning the dummy roping for the 5-8 division.
Kira Blackstad-Pimental’s long legs really helped her chase down the goat and get the ribbon to win the goat undecorating event for the 9-11 division. For results, see the scoreboard on page B2.
