LIHU‘E — Senior night at the Raiderdome went as planned for Kaua‘i High School. The Red Raiders swept the Warriors in both JV boys and girls matches and in the varsity boys and girls matches as well. Plus, the Red Raider boys clinched the KIF title and increased their undefeated record to 7-0.
The Kaua‘i boys, led by Futi Tavana, Kevin Downing, and Ryan Nagaoka, controlled the first set from the start with leads of 4-0, 10-5, 13-6, and 23-13. Alika Woodward, Kiah Imai, and Chris Ramelb paced the Warrior charge in the first set. A Micah Young kill ended the game in favor of the Red Raiders, 25-16.
Kapa‘a led early in the second set, but Kaua‘i took control for the eventual match win, 25-18. The Kaua‘i girls moved a step closer to a KIF crown with the win. The Red Raiders are tied with Kapa‘a at 2-1 in the second round. Waimea sits at 0-2, but still has a chance at the second round crown, with two games remaining (Kaua‘i at Waimea, Waimea at Kapa‘a).
Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a battled in the first set with numerous ties with the last one at 18-18. Kaua‘i’s Kehau Judd, Tina Moger, Jenna Gampon, and Erin Fabro led the way. Kapa‘a was paced by Jennifer Lindsey, Britney Carvalho, Poe Gantt, and Joliann Arzadon. A Judd roof gave the Red Raiders a 22-20 advantage and Fabro’s kill made it 23-20. Moger ended the first game with a slam down the pipe to give Kaua‘i the first set, 25-23. Both teams dueled in the second to a 15-15 tie. Arzadon, Lindsey, and Carvalho fueled the Kapa‘a surge. Kaua‘i’s Ligaya Malones, Moger, and Ho‘onani Dennis came up with the big plays.
A Dennis ace gave Kaua‘i a 24- 20 lead and a Kapa‘a service error ended the game at 25-21. The Kaua‘i JV boys beat Kapa‘a in two sets, 25-23, 25-18. The Red Raider girls finished off the Warriors, 25-9, 25-11. KIF volleyball continues on Wednesday, Oct. 20 with Kaua‘i traveling to Waimea to face the Menehune.
