Another busy Saturday for Kaua‘i’s sports people
By Duane Shimogawa – The Garden Island
With KIF events and youth sports blaring away, it’s definitely one of the most busiest times of the year for me.
The KIF bowling season kicked off yesterday, along with cross-country.
Also, volleyball action continued in Waimea and boy what a first round it was.
Congratulations to Coach Rich Roberts and the Kaua‘i girls and Coach Shawn Doo and the Kaua‘i boys for their first round triumphs. Now all they have to do is just win another round! Sounds easy, but it’s not going to be because Waimea and Kapa‘a will be ready in the second round.
While at the game, Bo and Emily Fabro (Erin’s parents), the perfect couple strolled into Waimea Gym with one thing wrong!
Emily was wearing a Kapa‘a shirt! When’s the last time you saw a Red Raider parent sporting Kapa‘a colors?
But she told me that she was rooting for Kapa‘a since Waimea needed the win to force a playoff with Kaua‘i.
Meanwhile, former Red Raider, Sheldon “Soj” Carvalho, who’s doing pretty well himself as a math teacher at Kalaheo High School on O‘ahu took some time out to catch the action to watch brother Merrill coach the Kapa‘a Warriors.
“Soj” is looking to get into coaching, just like his brother, so be on the look out for another Carvalho on the bench.
Sheldon played against Milo Haneberg and Kaipo Kealalio Jr., who are both coaches for the Kapa‘a High School girls varsity volleyball team, who pulled off a major upset last night against Waimea (Congrats Milo and Kaipo).
Mike Niau of Niau Construction, along with his wife (Trisha’s parents) took in the edge of your seat action in Waimea.
Mike and I just met about a week ago at the bowling alley (Right Mike)!
At Hanapepe Stadium, Kaua‘i’s second week of Pop Warner played its way with an array of great games.
By the way, the announcers at the games do a terrific job, especially with mentioning the items at the food booth (made me really hungry…beef stew, lau lau plate..mmm).
Comish Leon Gonsalves was also in the announcer’s booth doing his game recaps. (Thanks for your committment to Kaua‘i’s youth, Leon).
Lihu‘e coach Dean Pigao and wife Mary were busy balancing soccer and football, but the whole family gathered at Hanapepe Stadium.
Now I got their three daughters’ names, Ashton (Western Oregon student), who’s going to try out next season for the soccer squad, Tasha and Whitney (up and coming soccer players), but wait, there’s still one more and she’s enjoying herself as a cheerleader, but we all know that she’ll probably put on the soccer shoes, once she’s old enough to lace it up.
Lenny Carvalho Sr. and Jr. were out on the field, along with the rest of the officials in Hanapepe.
The crew is still looking for more officials and if you’re interested, they meet Wednesday nights, 7 p.m. at the Lihu‘e Neighborhood Center.
The Pop Warner action shifts back to Vidinha Stadium next week Saturday and Sunday and don’t forget to check out additional games today at Hanapepe Stadium.
So there you have it, another week of games, but we’re just getting started.
