Busch sweeps New Hampshire
LOUDON, N.H. — Kurt Busch had plenty of gas this time.
After running out of fuel while leading eight laps from the end a week earlier in Richmond, Busch dominated Sunday’s NASCAR Nextel Cup race, completing a sweep of the 2004 events at New Hampshire International Speedway and coming away tied with Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the lead after the first race of the new 10-man, 10-race championship showdown.
“Well, No. 1 is in the books, but there’s still an awful lot of work to do,” Busch said after leading 155 of the 300 laps on the 1.058-mile oval in the Sylvania 300.
The win was the third of the season for Busch, who began the day seventh in the points standings.
Matt Kenseth, the 2003 series champion, was second, crossing the finish line 2.488-seconds — about 20 car lengths — behind his Roush Racing teammate.
Earnhardt ran strong all the way Sunday, finishing third. He was followed by rookie Kasey Kahne, Jamie McMurray, Joe Nemechek, Jeff Gordon, Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Sterling Marlin and Mark Martin.
Gordon, Sadler, Johnson and Martin are all among the title contenders, with Gordon, who began the day with a five-point lead over teammate Johnson, now third, nine points behind the leaders and one point ahead of Kenseth. Johnson fell to fifth, 30 points back.
