PUHI — With school back in session just a week, the Kaua‘i Community College culinary arts department lost little time launching their “Fine Dining” program as they opened the doors to the dining facility Tuesday morning.
This “fine dining,” though, comes with a twist. It’s served during lunch. Somehow, though, “fine lunching” just doesn’t convey the same idea, hence the “Fine Dining” title.
Also, with the student chefs oftentimes off to their night jobs at local hotels and restaurants around dinner time, it only made sense for KCC culinary-arts instructors to offer the Fine Dining during lunch hours on campus.
Somehow, word of the program seems to find its way to the right people, as KCC culinary-arts instructor Billy Gibson, who serves as host for the dining room, noted that almost all of the tables were filled the first day, and there have already been calls inquiring about next week’s menu.
The popular program allows patrons an opportunity to experience cuisine prepared by KCC culinary-arts students, while it provides the students a hands-on approach to preparing the various types of dishes that make up the menu.
These include everything from appetizers to dessert, and following the meal, students appear before the usually-packed dining room to explain how they prepared their respective dishes.
Gibson said that seating usually starts from 11:30 a.m., although tables were already occupied before the 11:30 a.m. opening Tuesday.
The Fine Dining program takes place at the campus fine-dining facility on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays this semester. For more information, please contact the college dining room at 245-8243.
