They deliberately scheduled practice for late afternoon, so as to avoid the heat of the day.
But it was still hot, really hot, when members of the Kaua‘i All-Island Marching Band (KAIMB, also known as Ku Kilakila), took to the streets for their first street marching practice recently.
Nuhou Street, fronting Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School and running past The Home Depot, imitated closely enough a portion of the Tournament of Roses Parade route the band’s members hope to trek down on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005. Sections of the road were closed during the three-hour practice. Larry McIntosh, director of bands at Kaua‘i High School, directs the band, whose members, families and friends have been conducting several fund-raisers in efforts to raise the tens of thousands of dollars required to get a 300-member band to California for participation in the nationally televised parade. They are believed to be the first Kaua‘i-based band ever invited to the prestigious parade, marched before the Rose Bowl football game, still known as “the granddaddy of them all.”
