WAIMEA — JoJo’s shaved iced stand conveniently located across the Clem Gomes Gymnasium in Waimea, the site for the annual Blue-and-White boys volleyball tournament was filled with both fans and players, who were tormented from the westside heat yesterday. However, the volleyball action inside the gym made the heat disappear with tremendous play, as teams from across the state, including the three Kaua‘i high schools, converged in pool play.
In pool blue, Waimea blue fell to Damien, 21-19, 21-16.
The menehune bounced back against Pearl City white with a 21-19, 21-9 win.
Two ties followed against Hawai‘i Baptist Academy (HBA), 16-21, 21-19 and versus Kapa‘a, 21-17, 14-21. Then Waimea defeated Castle, 21-17, 21-20. Kapa‘a, also in pool blue, surprised Iolani white, 21-19, 21-20.
Damien also beat Iolani white, 21-18, 21-19, but tied both HBA, 21-13, 15-21 and Castle, 21-16, 19-21 in their other two matches of the day. Iolani white came back to beat HBA, 21-12, 21-11 and tied Pearl City white, 21-20, 8-21.
Pearl City white also tied Castle, 14-21, 21-18. In the pool white, Kaua‘i High School dominated with four wins at the hands of Waimea white, 21-4, 21-7, Waipahu, 21-13, 21-8, Iolani, 21-14, 21-20, and Keaau, 21-13, 21-7. Iolani, one of the top teams in the state, was able to win four against one loss, versus Waimea white, 21-8, 21-12, Pearl City purple, 21-8, 21-12, Keaau, 21-16, 21-8, and Waipahu, 21-19, 21-13. Waimea white couldn’t find a win against Pearl City purple, 8-21, 18-21 and Waipahu, 8-21, 9-21.
Pearl City purple triumphed against Keaau, 21-13, 21-7, and tied Waipahu, 21-19, 19-21. Pool play continues today at the Clem Gomes Gymnasium on the campus of Waimea High School, with the action to start at 9:00 a.m.
