Headed for Maui
The adult league 3.5 women’s tennis team, captained by Joyce Yamase is going to represent Kaua‘i at the Sectional Championships being held from August 20-22 in Maui.
Janssen added to Rainbow staff
HONOLULU — Travis Janssen was announced as the newest member of the University of Hawai‘i Rainbow baseball staff by Head Coach Mike Trapasso. Janssen will work primiarily with hitters and infielders.
Janssen comes to UH from Northwestern State, where he was an assistant coach that oversaw recruiting, hitting, outfielders, and base running for three years, while also serving as third base coach.
“He has great experience and great energy that will allow our program to continue on the path that we have set over the past few seasons,” Trapasso said.
The Rainbows will open fall practice in September and will open the 2005 campaign on Feb. 10 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Two more sign on for UH men’s hoops
HONOLULU — University of Hawai’i men’s basketball head coach Riley Wallace announced on Monday, junior college transfers Kris Groce and Deonte Tatum have signed scholarship agreements to play for the Rainbow Warriors.
Groce and Tatum are the fourth and fifth recruits to sign with UH for the 2004-05 season.
Groce, a 5-foot-9 point guard from Columbia Basin College in Pasco, Wash., was named Most Valuable Player of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges Eastern Region.
Tatum, a 6-foot-2 point guard from Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa, was listed as a Top 10 junior college point guard by several national publications.
Junior college transfers, Botez, Matt Gibson, and Matt Gipson also signed on for the upcoming season.
The ‘Bows need to replace four starters and seven letterwinners from last season’s 21-12 squad, which advanced to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament.
In addition to departing seniors Phil Martin, Him Shimonovich, Jason Carter, Paul Jesinskis, starting point guard Logan Lee quit the team in July and returned to his hometown in Texas.
Ekolu Tennis Jamboree
Join the fun and free tennis on Saturday August 28 from 12 noon-3 p.m. at the Kiahuna Tennis Club celebrating USTA Member Appreciation and a round robin jamboree kicking off the Ekolu Tennis League.
An Ekolu Captain’s Meeting will be held from 3pm-4 p.m. following the jamboree.
For newcomers, Ekolu teams are comprised of mixed, women’s and men’s doubles with a minimum of six players.
League season will extend from September 4 thru October 31. Sectional championships will be December 3-5 at Central Oahu Recreational Park.
