The “Lynx,” a replica of an American-built War of 1812 privateer built in Maryland, is scheduled to arrive at Nawiliwili on Tuesday, August 24 at 10 a.m.
This will be a return visit for the ship, with crew dressed in period naval attire. She is a topsail schooner with 122-ft length overall and carries 6 each 6- pounder replica cannons.
The first sail training trip aboard the Lynx left Newport Beach, Ca. for Kaua‘i in July, 2002. Four young privateer students trained aboard the ship during the sail, learning maritime traditions of young America and visiting historic and ecologically important areas of the islands for three weeks before returning home.
Beginning August 24 tours of the ship are being given from noon to 4 p.m. at dockside near the Young Bros. terminal for tours. The cost is $5 for with children under 12 free.
The Lynx is operated under a non-profit foundation and depends on fundraising to offer affordable sailing education for many current, youth educational sailing programs.
There are also spaces available for 25 “sailors” to ride aboard the ship from Nawiliwili to Hanalei Bay on Saturday, August 28. The cruise is a fundraiser for the ship, with a $100 fee for adults and $50 fee for children under 12. For more information and to make reservations for the Nawiliwili- Hanalei sail please contact Alan Fayé at 826-9560.
The Lynx is set to depart from Hanalei Bay for San Francisco on Monday, August 30.
