At about 2:30 p.m. Friday, while drilling exploratory bore holes on Kuhio Highway in the truck climbing, Lihu‘e-bound lane at Kapaia Hill, a contractor for the state Department of Transportation of Highways Division apparently accidentally bored into the existing 10-inch sewage force main.
This caused sewage to flow onto and along Kuhio Highway.
The mauka lane of travel on the three-lane road section was closed to traffic Friday afternoon following the spill. The state Highways Division hired a contractor to make repairs to the sewer line, said Mel Matsumura, chief of the County of Kaua‘i’s Wastewater Division. Matsumura said the repair would be completed sometime Friday night or early Saturday morning.
