Just when you thought that only horse racing required photo finishes, Mokihana Aquatics’ Meaghan Sims centimetered her way to a win over fellow teammate Katelyn Umetsu, by a one-hundreth of a second (30.19 to 30.20) in the women’s 18-and-under 50 free-style event, which was the closest match of the weekend, which brought over 100 swimmers to the Kaua‘i High School pool.
Umetsu, who came back to Kaua‘i, after helping her jr. lifeguard team win the state title, showed off her multi-talented skills in the pool.
The 14-year-old Sims (1:05.38) also picked up the win in the women’s 18-and-under 100 yard free-style over Aloha Aquatics Association’s Josette Gose (1:12.47). Mokihana’s Keenan Anaya (52.49) swam past Unattached swimmer, Ben Baldwin (53.92) in the men’s 18-and-under 100 yard free-style. The women’s 13-14 100 yard free was dominated by Mokihana, which took the top two spots, Amanda Tanner (1:07.39) and Michelle Woltman (1:08.53). On the men’s side for the 13-14 100 yard free-style, Matthew Ross (1:09.01) of Mokihana edged Brandt Saki (1:11.84) of Maui Gold for the win. In the 11-12 women’s 100 yard free-style Mokihana’s Tori Kobayashi (1:11.78) dominated the field for the win, followed by fellow teammate, Chelsea Chock (1:13.22). Barbers Point swimmer Polu Arsiga (1:14.66) got the win over Aloha Aquatics’ Barndon Cha (1:16.69) for the victory in the men’s 11-12 100 yard free-style.
In a tight finish, Mokihana’s Sarah Faraola (1:08.46) nudged past teammate Keyah-Leilani Agoot (1:08.69) in the women’s 11-12 100 yard free-style. Keli‘i Vidal (1:11.38) of the Hawai‘i Swim Club got the win over San Ramon Valley-Livermore’s Gareth Crabb (1:12.46) in the men’s 11-12 100 yard free-style. Aloha Aquatics dominated the women’s 10-and-under 100 yard free-style, as Caitlin Kaneshiro (1:20.84) and Krislyn Cha (1:24.66) finished one and two in the event.
Carter Suzuki (1:27.37) of Maui Gold and Reece Murata (1:27.43) of Maui Swim Club found themselves in a tight race with Suzuki getting the close win in the men’s 10-and-under 100 yard free-style.
Gose (1:13.76) of Aloha Aquatics got another win in the women’s 10-and-under 100 yard free-style over Kelly Culliney (1:18.50) of Mokihana Aquatics. Matthew Holzman (1:13.75) picked up the win in the men’s 10-and-under 100 yard free-style. Sims (1:16.98) notched another win for Mokihana Aquatics in the women’s 100 yard fly, over teammate Keyah-Leilani Agoot (1:21.06). Keenan Anaya (58.16) of Mokihana got the win in the men’s 18-and-under 100 yard fly. In the women’s 13-14 100 yard fly, Christina Sie (1:19.99) of Aloha Aquatics got the win over Kellie Oshiro of Mokihana (1:21.96).
Megan Chock (44.46) swam the fastest in the women’s 11-12 50 yard fly for the win. Tori Kobayashi (38.07) got her second win in the 11-12 50 yard fly. In the women’s 11-12 50 yard fly, Sarah Faraola (35.49) swam past Keyah-Leilani Agoot (36.12) for the win. Kelly Culliney was the winner in the women’s 10-and-under 50 yard fly. Matthew Holzman (38.49) got another win in the men’s 10-and-under 50 yard fly and Yasmine Ware of Mokihana Aquatics picked up the victory in the women’s 8-and-under 25 yard fly. Agoot (1:23.83) continued her winning ways with a win in the women’s 18-and-under 100 yard breast and Michelle Woltman (1:29.49), along with Amanda Tanner (1:29.87) were able to give the crowd an edge of your seat finish, but Woltman prevailed in the women’s 13-14 100 yard breast. Megan Ross (49.15) in the 11-12 50 yard breast came up with the win and Kendra Rask (46.20) out swam everyone in the women’s 11-12 50 yard breast.
Agoot (40.09) battled Faraola (41.47) for the women’s 11-12 50 yard breast, with Agoot scooting for the win. Makana Waiamau of Mokihana won the women’s 10-and-under 50 yard breast over teammate Danielle White (56.03). Holzman (42.12) was victorious in the men’s 10-and-under 50 yard breast and Kate Machorek was the only finisher in the women’s 6-and-under 25 yard breast.
Mokihana Aquatics dominated the women’s 18-and-under 200 yard free-style, finishing one and two: “A” squad: (2:06.28) Torrey Ikeda, Kellie Oshiro, Michelle Woltmon, and Meaghan Sims. “B” squad: (2:10.13) Kesia Anaya, Keyah-Leilani Agoot, JD Needham, and Tori Kobayashi.
The men’s 18-and-under 200 yard free-style relay was an exciting race that came down to a close finish with Barbers Point (1:42.34): (Virgil Tanizaki, Lopaka Byers, Mike Nowak, and Freddie Maglangit) getting the win over Mokihana Aquatics (1:42.34): Tyson Chihara, Kelsey Tanaka, Keenan Anaya, and Aaron Ramelb. Mokihana also took the women’s 8-and-under 200 yard free relay (3:33.06): Ku‘uipo Rapozo, Caitlyn Oshiro, Yasmine Ware, and Kate Machorek. Umetsu (2:40.43), Sims (2:41.04) and Agoot (2:43.16) finished one-two-three in the women’s 18-and-under 200 yard IM. Keenan Anaya (2:07.99) got the easy win over Baldwin (2:11.09) in the men’s 18-and-under 200 yard IM. Amanda Tanner (2:49.40) and Michelle Woltmon (2:50.83) were two and three respectively in the women’s 13-14 200 yard IM. Matthew Ross (3:03.06) and Robby Ellis (3:03.06) were two and three in the men’s 13-14 200 yard IM. Kendra Rask (1:27.10) and JD Needham (1:27.41) were also two and three in the women’s 11-12 100 yard IM. Agoot (1:15.69) won yet another event in the women’s 11-12 100 yard IM, followed by Faraola (1:17.16). Kelly Culliney (1:36.07) won a close one over Maui Gold’s Alyssa Waki (1:36.40) in the women’s 10-and-under 100 yard IM. Holzman (1:28.91) was victorious in the men’s 10-and-under 100 yard IM. Katelyn Umetsu (1:13.50) continued her hot streak with a win in the women’s 18-and-under 100 yard backstroke and Keenan Anaya (1:00.52) finished first in the men’s 18-and-under 100 yard backstroke. Michelle Woltmon (1:21.03) picked up another win in the women’s 13-14 100 yard backstroke in a close one over Barbers Point swimmer Rizzi Milton (1:21.97). Matthew Ross (1:27.14) got the second-place nod in the men’s 13-14 100 yard back and Megan Chock (47.07) picked up the win in the women’s 11-12 50 yard backstroke. It was all Mokihana Aquatics in the women’s 11-12 50 yard backstroke, as Chelsea Chock (39.69), Kendra Rask (42.38), and Juli Blachowiak (44.03) finished in the one, two, and three spots. The same was said for the women’s 11-12 50 yard backstroke, as Sarah Faraola (35.86), Keyah-Leilani Agoot (37.04), and Kesia Anaya (37.56) were one, two, and three. Evan Hamamoto (53.36) got the win in the men’s 10-and-under 50 yard backstroke and Kelly Culliney (43.72) won the women’s 10-and-under 50 yard backstroke. Matthew Holzman (41.89) took the men’s 10-and-under 50 yard backstroke and Kate Machorek (27.50) gave it her all for the win in the women’s 6-and-under 25 yard backstroke. Justin White (36.94) and Kyle Riddle (41.19) finished two and three in the men’s 6-and-under 25 yard backstroke for Mokihana. Keenan Anaya (23.82) breezed past the field in the men’s 18-and-under 50 yard free and Amanda Tanner (30.71), along with Michelle Woltmon (30.88) finished one and two in the women’s 13-14 50 yard free. Matthew Ross (30.31) took home the top prize in the men’s 13-14 50 yard free and Chelsea Chock (34.78), Sinead Sims (36.19), and Megan Chock (37.53) finished one, two, and three in the women’s 11-12 50 yard free.
Mokihana dominated the women’s 11-12 50 yard free with Sara Faraola (29.72), Kesia Anaya (31.22), Keyah-Leilani Agoot (32.02), Tori Kobayashi (32.84), and JD Needham (33.80) taking the first five spots. Hunter Rogers (43.56) came in second in the women’s 10-and-under 50 yard free and Kelly Culliney (34.92) finished third in the women’s 10-and-under 50 yard free.
Matthew Holzman (35.16) came away with the men’s 10-and-under title in the 50 yard free and Kate Machorek (22.07) continued to do well in the women’s 6-and-under 25 yard free. Kaikane Anderson (26.24) and Justin White (27.69) finished in second and third place in the men’s 6-and-under 25 yard free. Ku‘uipo Rapozo (22.53) got the win in the women’s 8-and-under 25 yard free, with Victoria Aiu (24.01) capturing the third-place spot. Makali‘i Pratt (25.75) came in second in the men’s 8-and-under 25 yard free. Mokihana took the top two spots in the women’s 18-and-under 200 yard medley relay, as Mokihana “A”: (2:18.13): Meaghan Sims, Torrey Ikeda, Katelyn Umetsu, and Kellie Oshiro got the win, followed by Mokihana “B”: (2:23.50): Kesia Anaya, Keyah-Leilani Agoot, Tori Kobayashi, and Michelle Woltmon. Mokihana’s women’s 8-and-under 200 yard medley team won the event: (4:22.39): Kate Machorek, Caitlyn Oshiro, Ku‘uipo Rapozo, and Yasmine Ware. On the boys side, the 8-and-under Mokihana squad took third in the 200 yard medley: (5:10.61): Kaikane Anderson, Makali‘i Pratt, Kenji Mori, and Justin White. “It was another great weekend and next year should be even better, as we expect another great turnout and probably even more entries,” Mokihana Aquatics head coach Orlando Anaya said.
