Jim Lucas of Hoike Community TV had the right spot, and coupled with his student crew, had the best spot. Jim even had time to check out the monk seal pup at Po‘ipu, and the pup must’ve known the camera was coming because Jim said both mom and pup were active.
Of course, back to Roy and Glenda who were taking advantage of the Hanapepe Cafe eaves to stay dry, Glenda is one of the shakers and movers for the Kalaheo School centennial luau coming up Oct. 16 that will climax a week-long celebration with a kachi kachi dance following the grinds. Ray and Diane Nitta (KIF schedule coming out, soon) and the rest of the Taiko Kaua‘i group also had the advantage of a tent to stay dry during their performance, and, of course, Russell the Rooster, along with his owner Mark Jeffers, even found a dragon from within Hanapepe Valley to help with the celebration.
But, things didn’t end there as Monday, Bernie Sakoda got all kinds of help for the Warabi Ashibi Okinawa Day Camp in Lihu‘e – Wayne Miyata had Dean Oshiro helping prepare the clay slabs for the budding artists, Soupbone Kashiwabara was drilling holes for the taiko (is that why they couldn’t find him at the Kaua‘i Vet Center?), and even Karen Kura-Hori came over from O‘ahu to help Bernie. Florence Tomita had some house guests from Japan helping out in the taiko section, and the only thing missing was Wanda Shibata. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow.
