A 69-year-old man barricaded himself in a bedroom with a knife and a spear gun Tuesday night and refused to leave for over two hours before police were forced to remove him.
Felicisimo Aguiran, of Kekaha, was arrested on five counts of terroristic threatening in the first degree and one count of assault in the second degree in relation to the incident, police officials said.
According to police, at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Kaua‘i Police Department dispatchers received a report that Aguiran had threatened and attacked a family member with a knife at his Nanamua Street residence.
Officers responded to the scene and discovered the suspect had barricaded himself in a bedroom with a knife and spear gun.
Attempts were made by responding officers to talk to the suspect, but he reportedly did not respond to patrol officers at the scene, police said. The suspect was alone in the bedroom.
Seven members of the KPD Special Services Technical (SST) team, similar to a SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team, were called from across the island to assist, and a negotiation team was also requested.
The negotiation team reportedly attempted to talk to the suspect, with minimal response. SST members entered the residence using a non-lethal distraction device, and Aguiran was subsequently arrested at about 11:10 p.m. Officials would not disclose the type of distraction device used.
Police said Aguiran sustained minor injuries, apparently a laceration to the head.
He was immediately treated by medics, then transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital by police vehicle. No officers were injured.
Aguiran is being held in the KPD cell block, and an investigation into the incident is continuing, officials added.
