Members of the Kaua‘i High School class of 1969 recently held a 35th year class reunion.
The reunion gatherings were held Friday, July 16 at Strikers Lounge at the Lihue Bowling Center and Saturday, July 17 at The 19th Hole at Wailua Golf Course.
Classmates traveled from around the state to attend, and one even came as far as Alaska to join the celebration. Della Castillo Simmons arrived with huge coolers full of king crab legs and fresh salmon which she smoked herself.
At the Saturday gathering, which started at 5:30 p.m., classmates enjoyed a dinner (with the crab legs and salmon) and sang karaoke and danced till 2 a.m.
Darryl Maeda entertained the group with many karaoke songs reminiscent of their days in high school. The group all sang “Days of My Youth,” which they also sang at their high school graduation, and “I’ll Remember You,” their senior class song.
“It was a big success,” said Rod Sueoka, one of the reunion organizers. “Not too many people (attended), so it was more fun with this small group.” Other organizers were Ray Hookano, Lois Arakaki Fujishige, Wendy Kawaguchi and Dorreen Castillo Frye.
Sueoka said the group has been discussing another reunion or get-together for classmates and friends in Las Vegas in another five years.
