Warning signs were posted at Kalapaki Beach after an estimated 2,000 gallons of sewage flowed into offshore waters Friday evening, according to Kaua‘i County officials.
But beach areas, which are frequented by visitors to the hotel and residents, remained opened though because the effects of the spill have been mitigated, officials said.
Work crews with the wastewater division of the Kaua‘i Count Public Works Department responded to the spill, and disinfected the polluted areas, county officials said.
Wastewater division officials said the spill occurred because of a problem at Marriott Hotel’s pump station in Nawiliwili.
Treated sewage is used to water golf courses at the resort site. It was not known if the sewage that went into the ocean was treated or raw.
